katherine jane photography bio picture
  • Welcome. I'm the freckle faced photographer and owner of Katherine Jane Photography. My studio is known for organic wedding & portrait photography, stellar customer service and warm living room style studio {pet friendly, penny candy, champagne, organic juice, cappuccino & a cotton candy machine.} When not in the studio I can be found traveling the world, antiquing, making fondue {the only other things I can make are sangria, salsa, chocolate chip cookies & monkey bread}, untagging myself on facebook, surfing in Costa Rica, wearing my Hunter rain boots even if it's not raining outside {I have two pairs, original green and limited edition silver}, drinking coffee with sugar and cream while still in bed, decorating my house {antiques please} , sneaking my dog onto my favorite beach in Maine, using typewriter font {typewiter font makes me think of my dad. He is like me...part nerd and part late night snacker}, and bragging to the world that I'm married to a Boston firefighter. My shy husband is the love of my life {I adore this image of us messy hair and I don't care.} We have a dogchild named Ernie and yes he is the studio mascot he might or might not have his own facebook page.

{studio news} part I… why Dorchester? part II….Dottie Hotties.

{Dorchester}
Many people have asked me why I set up shop in Dorchester. “why have your studio in Dorchester…I mean why not have a studio on Newbury Street or get a space in some funky artist building somewhere in Cambridge?” Then they come to my studio in Lower Mills. Then they get it.
Back in 2008 when my husband and I were house hunting we had a short list of where in the city we wanted to live and a long list of must haves. Here is just some items on the long list.
an old home but not a total fixer-upper
3 bedrooms
two bathrooms
a driveway
home office
a yard small enough to mow in 20 minutes but big enough for a garden and a future puppy
located no more than 8 miles from the North End but still within city limits (hubby is on the BFD.)
a basement
walk up attic
sunroom
foyer
Also on the list… safe streets, nice neighbors, sense of community, restaurants and shops within walking distance.
During the summer of 2008 we finally found a home that fulfilled both of my lists. This home was in Adams Village, Dorchester.
I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t know anything about Dorchester before I moved here, all I knew is that I found my home. Little did I know Dorchester would also become the new home of Katherine Jane Photography. That was not part of the plan or on any list.
That summer shortly after we closed on our home my husband mentioned to me that he saw a cute storefront space for rent about a mile from our new address. At the time I already had a great studio and so I wasn’t looking to move even though I had always wanted a storefront studio. I totally brushed him off…“a. I’m not paying storefront rent b. I’m not moving both home and studio at the same time and c. I’m not moving both home and studio at the same time in the middle of wedding season!” Fast forward 4 days later and we found ourselves in a part of Dorchester called Lower Mills. This is where everything changed. I totally and instantly fell in love with the vibe and energy of this cute neighborhood….what’s not to love… antique shops, boutiques, restaurants and the historic Baker Chocolate Factory. Lower Mills where have you been all my life! My husband pointed to this little vacant shop on the corner and said..“this is the space that I have been telling you about..” I peeked in the window and said to him and myself  “hi cute space..I have to have you…you have to be mine.”  It is not like the space was the most amazing studio that I had ever seen. Quite the opposite. The space was small, dull and blah. It had drab classroom blue carpeting, beige walls and a horrible gross white drop ceiling but I saw past all that ugly and focused more on the energy and feel of this slice of Lower Mills. I called the number listed on the for rent sign and 4 hours later I was signing the lease. It all happened so fast but there was just something special about Lower Mills and I just had to be a part of it.
3 1/2 years later and I have never been happier. I’m beyond thrilled to call Dorchester my home and very proud to have a Dorchester based business.  We have put so much love into both the house and studio to make them both feel like home. I really like being
part of a community…which is kind of crazytown for this once upon-a-time gypsy. The fact that I can walk to work on the bike path along the Neponset River, go home for lunch and be really flexible when it comes to working around my clients schedule makes me OOXX my Lower Mills studio even more. I have been known to have a 7am wedding consult and a 9pm wedding consult. Having a storefront space means I get to meet all different types of people and pets who walk past my studio everyday. I can also take the T to my studio because the Milton stop is just across the street…how sweet is that! Oh and  I have a window display that I change all the time. Fun stuff! I can also walk to the post office and bank…love that part!
{Dottie Hotties}
I’m always learning something new about about this place called Dorchester. There is nothing I enjoy more than discovering my own backyard which is why I was over the moon when I heard about a Dorchester Blog called Dottie Hotties. You might of seen them a few weeks ago featured in the Boston Herald. These ladies write about everything that is hot in Dot…..so you imagine how thrilled I was when they contacted me asking if I would chat with them about not only my studio but my home and style. You can read my interview here. Thanks Dottie Hotties for all the love!
Because blog posts without something to look at is b-or-i-n-g check out some images of my studio. As you can see I made some changes to the gross blue carpeting!
Here is what my studio space looked like when I first saw it…..
Here are some images of my studio space today.

{next post} My Valentines Day

This post made me sad that we don’t live closer and aren’t able to stop by your fun studio more often!

Kevin & Gwen {wedding} Elm Bank,Wellesley,MA

Many firsts for me with this wedding.

Gwen and Kevin’s intimate wedding was celebrated at Elm Bank. Everyone knows that I love this venue. There are so many nooks and crannies, textures, flowers and gardens that every wedding here really is its own. This wedding was no exception. I met Kevin for the first time prior to the ceremony. I met Gwen for the first time as she walked down the aisle(1st first.) The bride is a biology teacher (in 2010 she was Massachusetts Outstanding Biology Teacher of the Year) and like most great teachers she has so much energy and personality. The groom is a perfect match for her. They are very much two active, energetic, happy peas in-a-pod. Gwen is an avid birder and the bird details around the grounds made her big day a bit sweeter. The weather was perfect. I personally think that talking about the weather is b-o-r-i-n-g…but it really was a gift of a day. Blue skies and big fluffy clouds. The details, the orange accents and the food from The Catered Affair..sigh..perfect. Between the bride playing soccer IN HER DRESS(2nd first),to the groom wrestling in the grass and dirt with the kids(3rd first), I’m amazed that I got images of them standing still. I absolutely loved the game table and all the guests. I’m stealing this idea for my next outdoor party!   Lots of images to look at..enjoy!

PS. This was my last wedding of 2011. Next wedding post will be in April and feature my first couple of 2012!!

Gwen is an avid bird watcher. Kevin not so much! Elm Bank was the perfect backdrop for this wedding!

Let the games begin!

Soccer with the kids, sister and Aunt= Coolest bride ever.

I told that if I captured an image of a bee that I would make the bride very happy….:)

{studio news} a new collection….studio babies

Robert & Tiffany {wedding} Salem Country Club,Salem,MA

Last year while getting ready to leave a sun soaked sandy beach vacation,my husband asked me to try and unplug during our trip. No phones,no emailing, blogging, facebooking…etc. Sure I said….silly boy. I was however allowed to bring the laptop for Netflix/Hulu purposes only. One week later and I found myself sneaking off to the pool area WITH MY LAPTOP to quickly check my email…and there she was…a long sweet email from a bride in Tennessee. In this email Tiffany wrote about how she,a MA native, ended up in TN with her CA native, soon-to-be husband Robert. At that time I was already booked up for the 2011 season, but something about her email threw me into ihavetoshootthiswedding mode.

I met Tiffany & Robert in person for the first time while they were in Boston for a few days. We picked Boston’s North End for their e-session.It was AWESOME. It had been years since they strolled the streets of Boston. I was so happy that we clicked not only over emails & phone calls but also in person. I drove them to the airport after their e-session and fell even harder for them because they were not phased at all by the amount of dog hair that lives in my car. It is everywhere..cup holders, speedometer, inside the engine. They have dog-children too…they get it.

Love, laughter, tears, childhood home & church, donuts, sassy bridal party, gorgeous couple, family & friends of all ages,a whoopie pie wedding cake,a fire alarm,an evacuation,a fire truck and a in the flesh wedding crasher firefighter!

Michael & Stephanie {wedding} Walpole Country Club,Walpole,MA

Texas Texas Texas. No this wedding was not celebrated in Texas but this couple is originally from Texas and the love and energy at this intimate wedding was as big as their home state. I actually met this couple while shooting another wedding earlier this season, while I was at the reception they caught my attention. I couldn’t help but notice how gorgeous Stephanie was and how they moved though the crowd together like they were on some sort of happy, soft, love cloud. Fast forward a few months and {pow}- I ended up being the lucky girl photographing their wedding.

Michael & Stephanie actually met back in Texas while in high school, but sometimes it takes a few years of seperation in life to bring you back to the person that you are truly meant to spend your life with. Very.Romantic. This wedding was celebrated at the Walpole Country Club. The foliage was perfect and the bride even had a chance to show off some of her golf moves! Let me talk about the groom for one hot second….slightly camera shy and a total gentleman…the kind they just don’t make anymore.
Super sweet couple…I have a feeling you’ll see them on my blog again in the near future:)

I adore these invites..made by the artist bride herself.
